Most Mourvèdre in France is grown in Provence – particularly in Bandol – and in Languedoc.
It grows well vertically and tends to be productive, hence the significance of growing it on poor soils, pruning it back hard and debudding to limit yields.
It is a late-ripening variety which ripens at the same time as Carignan.
It therefore benefits from a late growing season. From a taste perspective, it is an extremely interesting varietal because it intermixes fruit and spice characters.
Its tannin structure is also very valuable.
